Giant Hybrid Cats

The name Liger represents a hybrid race made by crossing male lion (Panthera leo) and a female tiger (Panthera tigris). Liger carries more features of lion. There is also a hybrid race created by crossing male tiger and female lion named Tiglon, which carries more genetic characteristics of tiger. These cats still don’t have an official name because they are made in captivity and are not a result of natural selection. There are some data about existence of the large hybrid cats from the 17th century on the images of French naturalist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844). Today, zoos that respect rules “of the Association zoo” (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) do not allow the crossing of tigers and lions. Jungle Island in Miami, Florida is huge Zoo Park and the place where the largest wild cat in the world lives. Hercules is liger that weighs over 400 pounds. This giant cat was world famous in 2005 when after only 3 years of age was 408 pounds and was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cat in the world.
